| - We spotted this place on Yelp after searching for an All-You-Can-Eat sushi restaurant in the area. This place had just opened for lunch on that morning, but it was almost filled to capacity with people seated at every turn. The sizable interior included a large sushi bar in the back, TV, and three rows of tables that spread across the floor. We were fortunate to snag one of the last tables that came with laminated menus. It took a while to get the server to come by our table, but the food was well worth the wait.
For $21.95 per person, the menu was extensive, and included a list of nigiri, hand rolls, specialty rolls, side dishes, and desserts. Among the nigiri, my favorites were the Fresh Snow Crab, Salmon, Seared Salmon, Scallop, Yellowtail, Halibut, Red Snapper, and Salmon Eggs with a Quail Egg on top. The quality of the rice was good with nice textures, and the sushi chef did an impressive job with ponzu and yuzu sauces to add excitable dimensions to the fresh fish. On the down side, the cuts of the fish were noticeably small, sloppy, and inconsistent between pieces. We were also initially disappointed at how small these pieces were, but this has allowed us to sample a wide range of specialty rolls.
In particular, I enjoyed the Red Dragon Roll that came with spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, fresh water eel, and eel sauce on top. The sweet eel and avocado nicely intermingled with the spicy tuna. The noticeable crunch from the cucumber also rendered both freshness and texture.
The items to avoid were the Poke, as freshness and texture were both disappointing to say the least. Similarly, the Surf Clam Nigiri also lacked the profile to worth the calories. The Jala Jala Roll sounded good on paper--with chopped albacore, cucumber, avocado, salmon, yellowtail, and jalapenos--but it turned out dry and could use a sauce on top. The Crab Meat Handroll was also another item to avoid, as the imitation crab lacked the right sweet profile, and without a second filling, the flavor was insufficient to stand on its own.
Service was a hit or miss, and a bit rushed without taking into consideration that we were first time customers, and needed time to learn how to best orchestrate a meal that works for us. Overall, we had three rounds of sushi, and despite the shortcomings, we rolled out of the restaurant thoroughly satisfied. Interested diners can expect casual dining atmosphere, decent to good sushi, good value, but feeling a bit rushed given how busy this place can get. Good enough to warrant a strong 3-stars recommendation. We hope to return for a better experience when traveling in the area.
