| - Tucked away on a Spadina side street, the Village Chill's opening and closing are as good as any marker of the changing of the Seasons in Forest Hill.
There's no seating, save for a few rickety benches out front. f you're looking for a place to plop while enjoying a frozen treat, you're better off commandeering one of the painted outside the Second Cup, or a municipal bench anywhere along this tony stretch of road. After all people-watching is second only to malicious gossip when it comes to neighbourhood pastimes.
An indy ice cream parlour, the Village chill cherry-picks from some of the city's better purveyors. Greg's ice cream is always a hit. The selection of flavours sticks to the tried and true, rather than the esoteric. Diet-conscious snackers will prefer low-fat fro-yo swirled with a choice of fruit. It's not a patch on Pinkberry, but it staisfied cravings without spiking insulin. Frozen-dessert futurists may opt for Dippin-Dots. I prefer my ice cream in non-pellet form.
The Village Chill has started brewing Illy coffee in a bid to compete with Second Cup, Starbucks, and now Aroma. The coffee is decent and strong; other than the freebies at the local Kitchen Table, it's also the best-priced of the lot. The brew is inconsistent; watery one time, bitter the next. They pour in cream or sugar at your request, like at Tim Horton's, but unlike TH, they have yet to figure out a consistent pouring technique.
As ice cream spots go, there are more exciting options, but this isn't a neighbourhood known for excitement. Have a scoop of chocolate and vanilla. Sit back. Enjoy the show.
