  • If you are like me you don't know how to use the gym. You've possibly injured yourself a few times trying. You may have had a terrible trainer at least once that refused to accept your limits. You feel awkward in gym clothes. you quickly lose motivation and stop attending feeling the pain and shame while money seeps out of your bank account. you sometimes go only for a steam bath. on some level you've decided you are just not an athletic person. you're a funny person (or whatever you are) instead.Your pains and physical limitations have slowly become part of your identity. but you STILL can't SHAKE the dream of a life lived feeling strong. You wonder what your body's potential is. It makes you sad to think of how far from that you are. Accept defeat and give up on this dream entirely. OR GO TO VENICE FITNESS PREPARED TO GIVE WHAT IT TAKES. Be honest during your fitness assessment. When the man yells at you " you're 22 years old! you're supposed to be in your prime! why don't you take care of yourself?!" etc etc. Listen. Get upset if you have to but listen and recognize the truth (if it's there) (ie. "You are way to young to feel so shitty": TRUE or if it's not there: "you need to lose 3 inches off your calves" WHATEVER) GET A PERSONAL TRAINER EMEDIATELY. I bought a package and booked most of my sessions in the first month. I had an appointment every day for the first two weeks. Before this I did not KNOW how much I didn't know about working out. Also two weeks is the length of time your brain needs to form a habit. Keeping appointments with your trainer instills discipline you can use later on your own. If you don't know your willpower and this is a last ditch effort don't gamble with it. Get a trainer emediately. make an annoying amount of appointments. You need to submit to the experience and the only way to do that if you're lazy and weak and pessimistic like me is to set yourself up. This is the most expensive part of joining the gym, but for success it's everything. EVERYTHING. I am one hundred percent sure that I would have quit, or would be on the verge of quitting if I didn't have a trainer. There's no way in hell I would have half the results even if I didn't quit. Leila is AMAZING. She can tell while looking at muscles in your legs if you're breathing properly. She taught me EVERYTHING about machines. She has a deep knowledge of muscles, proper form, breathing, timing, everything. she's introduced me to a variety of options to get the results I want. She's tough but she's present. She makes me work hard and because I trust that I am getting the results I could only imagine a few weeks ago, and that she has set me up in a way in wich my joints are safe, im not going to have a heart attack, I surrender to the hard work. When she says "Can you do ten more" I always I think "no" and I say "I'll try" TRY THE DIET THEY GIVE YOU I work at a bakery. Flavour is the reason I get out of bed in the morning. Sticking to the strict diet I was given after my fitness assessment was not what happened at first. This is why I didn't say "stick to the diet" I followed the diet but then I was eating indian food. then I followed the diet and then I was angry and eating pie. I ate ribs. I ate birthday cake. I had 8 shots of tequila. On the day that they informed me that I hadn't lost any weight I bought four pairs of shoes and ate a subway steak and cheese sub (yes. I was so upset I ate cat food on a bun as an f u to dieting. ) BUT, the more I tried and the less junk I ate eventually lead to a dramatic difference. so DO IT NOW OR DO IT NEVER. Put in three weeks. You don't have to be a super human before you go to the gym to become a super human. Show up in your dorkishly new gym clothes feeling lazy and discouraged and lumpy. Take the criticism but don't let it fuel guilt or shame. Get angry and get determined. Wrestle the diet. Blow all your money on the trainer. The first two weeks I hated every second of it. I regretted making the appointments. I continued to feel weak and sore and embarassed and lazy. The diet pissed me off, being told to do ten more made me furious. The past two days I have done things with my body that were goals I'd set for NEXT YEAR.. I can bike further, lift heavier, sprint up stairs. I am full of energy. I am starting to see change in the way I fit into my clothes. My skin is clear and I feel young. After my workouts I feel high on life. TRUST THAT YOU CAN BECOME A GYM PERSON. Today I showed up for my fitness appointment with sunstroke (whoops) After feeling really lightheaded and seeing the floor tiles morph into each other, both leila and I decided to call it quits ten minutes in. When I left I noticed this pit of deep dissapointment in my gut. A month ago, I would have seen this as situation as a lucky get out of gym free card. I realized that this dissapointment today came from not getting my exercise fix! Holy *&^%*^% ! I'm a GYM person in THREE WEEKS. do it.
