| - It's nearly impossible to track down a local microbrewery in Las Vegas that's located anywhere near the Strip. Years ago, the bars out this way used to be dominated by the few US and European macrobrewers and craft beer choices were slim - perhaps even nonexistent. Goose Island was likely one of the few brands that really took off in a big way and opened peoples' eyes to beers that weren't just lagers. Of course craft beer has been a thing for many, many years, but I sense that the businesses here are opening their eyes to the wild world of real beer. And the profits that can come with it.
Enter Sin City Brewing Company, the first - and as far as I know, still the only - craft brewery on the Las Vegas Strip. I first sat down years ago at the bar at one of their other nearby locations to sample a flight and ended up leaving hours later after about ten IPAs and gorging on huge slices of 'za from a nearby food court. I should clarify; I was actually kicked out, but it was in a polite manner and they told me to go back to my hotel, rest for an hour, and come back for more hops. I was sh*tfaced. It's Vegas; no judgements allowed. That was the best dude ever though, no hard feelings for him.
Now that a few years had passed, my girlfriend and I decided to stop in at a different location so she could try some of their beers. The beer here is nothing mind-blowing, game-changing or innovative, but it is a welcome treat if you're a craft beer nerd and want to sample a beer flight on or near the Strip. The beer flight came in plastic cups, which seemed strange to me, but the pours were generous. The beers that stood out the most were the Octoberfest and the German Weissebier. The lager was nice and light, but bland, while the IPA was of an East Coast variety and I'm a huge hophead. I enjoyed the Irish Dry Stout, but with the temperatures outside hitting close to 100, it didn't go down too smoothly.
The bartender we were chatting with was totally rad and had some hilarious stories. Equally funny was the people watching, which never ever gets boring in Vegas. Overall, I'd give the beers 3/5, but with the awesome digs, friendly vibe and service, and the option for downing a pint of craft on the Strip, I'll bump it up to four. If options were plentiful like they are in Portland or San Diego, Sin City Brewing would have to try a bit harder to stay relevant. Cheers guys, I'll be back on my next visit!
