| - After long day of shopping, needed to sit down and re-energize with some food so we decided to go for some afternoon tea. This was the only place downtown that serves afternoon tea on Fridays so we tried it here at King Edward Hotel. I've been here for training before but never for afternoon tea. The menu was different than what they posted online and so was the price but it was too late once we sat down.
I picked the Nutcracker tea blend that is for the Christmas period. Our teas came first, the dinnerware was pretty fancy, all matching cups and plates. The tea pot was not matching though so that was disappointing. And they only had white sugar and milk on the table - no brown sugar or honey as an option. The black tea was not that strong, very mild.
Our sandwiches were served on a plate outside from the tier of desserts. In my opinion, the savoury sandwiches were the best part of the food. From beef wellington puff pastry, lemon & dill cured salmon, egg salad, duck confit on cranberry sage stuffing, honey ham with pineapple chutney. They were all delicious. I saved some to eat after trying some of the sweets to change my taste palette.
For the dessert tiers, there was the cranberry & citrus peel scones. The citrus scones was pretty good, I like it better than the cranberry one. It was served with Devonshire cream and strawberry jam. I felt in love with the jam, a big burst of strawberry taste, I almost licked it clean. It's from Greaves Jam from Niagara on the lake. I need to go there and get some!!
Now for the rest of the desserts. Sticky carrot toffee pudding - this was ok, not too sweet, not a big fan of carrot cake. Sherry trifle shooter - nothing special, a few berries with custard. Apple mincemeat tart - this was not bad, I like the tart crust and it crumbles when you take one bite. Peppermint white chocolate mousse - again, nothing really special. Orange infused shortbread - there wasn't much shortbread, and it was soggy from the layer on top.
Overall, the service was good, he did a very good job on explaining everything and each piece on the tier. The atmosphere was nice, sit at the back of the lobby with a lovely Christmas tree in the centre. But the food was so-so, the savoury was good but the desserts need more work. It seem more store brought and not a high class hotel chef pastry dessert. And for the price - $42 hmm, it was not worth it.
