| - Here I finally am, writing my first Yelp review, and why not have my first review be about a place that I have been eating at since I was a very young kid, one that I have been to nearly 50 times.
El Torito has always been a simple, inexpensive alternative to your typical Mexican restaurant in the area, it definitely caters toward the local inhabitants of Henderson, it offers the traditional items that you would expect from a Mexican eatery, but provides it in a different way, with the menu varying beyond just Mexican food, things like 'chicken tenders' and even 'BLT sandwiches' are featured on the menu. El Torito doesn't advertise itself as an elegant eatery, and its obvious that they have no interest in creating a special atmosphere. Both the interior and exterior are very plain, with little identity created, you can tell that the mindset of design stayed within your typical Henderson boundary, but, El Torito can pull this off simply do to the local crowd swarming in on a nightly basis, the regular customer base expects little beyond the food, so placing the burden of 'interior design' on El Torito is inquisitional, just dont expect anything fancy or mind-blowing before you arrive.
Once you receive your menus, you will then be given a small tray of chips and salsa, as per usual at a Mexican eatery, the chips aren't special, and in all my experiences they have never actually been heated, its as if the chips are taking directly out of the bag, but, the Salsa has a unique flavor that is indeed good, this will be your first run in with the food. The Mexican portion of the menu doesn't feature anything substantially special that you cant find at other restaurants, but, El Torito does include an American-Mexican style of food. It offers ground beef with a majority of its items, which is always a good alternative when you get sick of the standard shredded beef that you encounter at most Mexican Restaurants. The enchiladas are the highlight of the menu, the sauce is simply brilliant, and you will either love, or dislike the sauce as it has a very rich flavor, you also have the option of ordering hot enchilada sauce which adds a nice kick and isn't overwhelming at all. Beyond the enchiladas, a majority of the items on the menu are mediocre, they have decent flavor and good portion size for what you pay for, but wont necessarily blow your mind.
Lastly, the service varies, on some occasions, you can get absolutely terrible service, while on other days, you can get great service. El Torito tends to be busy, especially on weekend nights, so expect a large amount of people eating and perhaps a short waiting time. Gia seems to be the best server, she is always nice and quick with delivering your order. The service itself is pretty much what you would expect from a local restaurant.
In the end, El Torito is a inexpensive restaurant that is an easy destination if you are looking to savor a quick bite, I would recommend this restaurant to casual eaters, but I would personally avoid this restaurant as a date spot or romantic destination.
