  • We were visiting our grandkids and decided to visit the new aquarium. It is expensive for the size and quality of the venue. The tanks seem dirty and murky, the fish are tiny. Why would you put trout the size of you small finger on display? Are they running a hatchery here or an aquarium? A hatchery might have been more interesting and productive. It looks like someone said, "we can get a bunch of little fish cheap" or perhaps the tanks cannot accommodate full sized fish or maybe the fish are representative of what actually resides in the polluted Cuyahoga. Who knows! I'd love to attend an ask the curator session. There seems to be a problems with the lighting, one has difficulty reading the signage that accompanies the exhibits. The aquarium smelled in places. Some of the tanks looked dirty. The scarce seating within the venue consists of a few over-sized lawn chair, allowing all of about five people to sit. There is an odd round tank about three feet tall with three people standing in it holding boxes of stuff to show kids. I guess the children are suppose to interact with the fish but why such a large tank and only three areas to interact? Why do those people have to stand in the water while holding a box of mollusks out of the water. This was a really weird exhibit. The last exhibit in the aquarium was a large walk through fish tank. The water seemed cloudy and dirty and in spots the lighting impeded the visibility. This exhibit was the most interesting and if they get the murky under control, it would raise my scoring of the venue. The venue itself is surrounded by a sea of concrete, known as a parking lot and it is located in a fairly desolate area. I certainly would not go there in the evening. There are no places to eat in the area. I found the employees for the most part helpful and willing to answer questions. Cleveland seem to have a problem with putting together coherent functional attractions. The R&R Hall of Fame (also over-priced), seems to suffer from the same lack of coherence as this venue. Both of these places have the feeling of being thrown together. This is a newish venue and perhaps needs some time to reflect about the story it is trying to tell. 8/2012 I'm updating the review. Some the the issues we experienced the first time through have been resolved. We revisited because my son had a family pass. The water quality issue in the large see through, walk through fish tank has been resolved and it is quite attractive and a dramatic finished to visit. The smells in the alligator tank have been taken care of. The first rooms still need work. They seem to have added some reasonably sized fish to the Ohio exhibit but the trout tank only had two finger sized trout. The exhibits still need better labeling.
