| - You know the big names - Beatles, Stones, Elvis... well, the best part of the Rock Hall is getting all of the foundational acts, promoters, and personalities that brought rock to life. It's about the branches of music and the innovators who keep it alive today. And it's about being really, really loud.
If you're visiting the Rock Hall, take time to hunker down a bit. Don't expect to breeze through in an hour and go on with your day. Really take time to read the exhibits, get the full story, and for God's sake LISTEN TO THE MUSIC. It drives me nuts to see people breeze by a guitar display without seeing who played it and the significance of the piece.
The special exhibits really raise the bar. The recent Power of Rock exhibit and film literally rocked my socks off. I watched the film and was so fixated on it that I forgot to blink. My eyes were watering like mad! (Prince's guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps during the induction of George Harrison was incredible on the big screen and with those speakers!)
It's one thing to take it all in, but there's plenty of opportunities that people miss in contributing and interacting. If it's your first time, I recommend finding a staff member and asking about cool things to see, do, and hear while you're at the museum. Everyone is really excited to help out and really passionate about the music and culture of Rock. I had some great "rock philosophy" discussions with some of the staff and volunteers, which led to a "have you heard this album?" discussions. The experience is best when you interact and feel the Rock. GIVE IN TO THE MUSIC.
Give yourself 3-4 solid hours to take it all in. There's a lot of fascinating things waiting for you in the Rock Hall.
