  • For my 200th review...a place, that if it had not had such wonderful natural defenses, there may have been no reviews... The George & Dragon ("G&D") earns its 5-star rating from: great barkeeps, quality pool tables, damn good fish and chips (and other grub), great atmosphere, good patrons, and sturdy walls. Yes...I said sturdy walls. Time: Friday, February 21, 2001.... 9:59:45 through 9:59:55 pm MST. Event: The Great Guinness Toast of 2001 for the world record....at exactly 10 pm. The reader's digest version: Co-workers and I agree to celebrate HH at the G&D and stay 'till the Guinness toast. We stake our claim on the first booth on the left as you enter. In fact our party ebbs and flows over the course of the night and we take up much more than the booth and gobble up surrounding tables and standing room only floor space. As the time to toast nears the G&D becomes packed to the gills. Standing room only. Loud as fuck. Impossible to move. There is a MC of sorts in the back keeping the crowd on task and announcing random countdown times...and starts the actual countdown at 30 seconds. The entire bar has Guinnesses in their hands. "20...19...18...17..." What was an already packed entrance (merely two feet away from my right) becomes ultra packed by a sudden rush of people falling forward like at a concert when the band shows up. "16...15..." Screams...lots of them...and an even more frantic push in the doors and next to me. It is so loud everywhere else the MC takes this for enthusiasm. "14..." *Very loud crash* more screams...people literally climbing over people to get into bar...this is all just feet away from me. MC hears this and assumes crowd really getting into it. "13...12...11...10..." All the new people in bar look terrified and confusion reigns. "9...8...7...6...5..." More screams and a second crash just feet away from me into bench outside booth. MC continues completely oblivious...in fact maybe 80% of bar is oblivious. "......1! Cheers!" Everyone, even all the people still picking themselves up off floor by the entrance, and all those who were once screaming bloody murder, and everyone surrounding the immediate scene, as well as yours truly, raise their pint and yell, "Cheers!" Turns out, unbeknownst to me at the time, a patron was kicked out about 5pm earlier in the day. He knew about the Guinness Toast at 10 pm. So he proceeded to wait across the street in his truck, get more liquored up, and drives his truck into the G&D exactly at 10 pm as fast as he could get his truck going before the collision. Luckily for many, including myself, he hit the pillar just to the left of the front door. He proceeded to back up and try ramming the window outside my booth but only got minimal speed and was foiled by the bench. He ran...and got caught. So..G&D..gets 5-stars for having great natural defenses and good sturdy walls...I may not be here today if it hadn't.
