  • stopped by Lux, which was overcrowded, to put it mildly. Uhm, hello ridiculous hipsters, I NEED A PLACE TO STUDY! Some of us have grad school finals to study for, unlike you, who could go somewhere else to look cool with your skinny jeans and beanies. I digress. the Mr and I left and drove up central, looking for a nice DT phx alternative to Sbux. And we saw Lola. True, the evening/weekday hours may suck (7pm - btw, most OC coffee shops close at that time OR EARLIER!!!!), but on that Saturday afternoon, Lola was EXACTLY what I needed. And since I was only in town for the weekend, those hours don't really bother me much. Huge and roomy, tons of cool seating options and tables, plugs for those of you that need your laptops, and *freeeee* WI-FI, Lola is truly a MUCH BETTER study option. I decided to forgo my usual: small Soy Hazelnut Latte *gasp!*, and ordered one of their specials, the Matador. I can't even remember exactly what this is, but something like a mocha with cinnamon or some magic dust? I dunno, but this sucker was goooooood. A little sweet, but I would do it again. The baristas gave me a tip - bc it is sweet, it's actually better to get a small, since they add in less cream/flavor, versus the larger sizes. I know that sounds common sense, but I guess they don't upgrade sizes proportionally? Whatevs, it was gooooood. And the whipped cream? OH MY. I usually turn down whipped cream without a blink of an eye, but those sneaky little baristas conned me into getting it with the whipped cream. i caved, after they offered to make me a little espresso cup of cream, since it was that good. WHICH IT WAS. I know they infuse some espresso in it, and something else - again, perhaps that magical crack dust? Do yourself a favor and get your drink with the whipped cream. Pretend it is fat free. And honestly, I thought the service here was MUCH muuuuuuch better than at Lux (maybe my jeans weren't skinny enough?) and most other coffee shops that I've been to (and I have been to quite a few, believe me. it's almost a hobby). The baristas were super friendly, taking the time to explain the drinks to me, seduce me into trying the whipped cream, etc. If I were to move back to Phx, this would be one of my go-to study spots, for sure. And if everyone else doesn't like it, then GOOD, more peace and quiet for me!
