  • I love an creative spin on old classics and what could be more interesting than a new take on a favourite dessert. You could call this Asian Fusion ... I just call it good ice cream. Wong's is a pretty sparse little shop in Chinatown East. Just up the stairs and you'll find yourself in a clean and fairly empty store that has a craft paper menu of the really interesting flavours. There is not a lot seating... I think only 3 bar stools and one tiny table for 2 maybe. It's mostly a take out spot. There are some unique Toronto focused products on the shelves... but it's all about the ice cream for me. On a decently sunny Saturday, line up wasn't too bad... maybe only a couple before us. Service was prompt and a bit hipsterish but still friendly enough to not eye roll when offering the samples. Wong's joins the Kekou and Put a Cone on It as the newest effort to expand the typical ice cream flavours. I'm NOT calling them a trend cause I do wish them to stay forever and be successful. I find Wong's more inventive and creative in their offerings... it just pushes the boundaries a bit more than the other two. It does have your typical good Vietnamese Coffee and Hong Kong Tea (all 3 have that) but it also have Srircha Buttered Popcorn, Pineapple cilantro, White Rabbit Candy, or Wasabi Honey. That is definitely pushing the envelope and loving they're bringing in new ways to look at dessert. Knowing the day is going to be filled with good food, I'm resigned to only get one scoop at $4.75. I appreciated how they let me try a few ones before going with their popular flavour that has been there since beginning ... black sesame with salted duck egg. Black Sesame with Salted Duck Egg ice cream - I know most people would be "salted duck egg in ice cream??" but I have to admit this worked really well. Black sesame is a common ice cream flavour but for those who havent tried it before... it's a pleasant nutty note that is really rich and gives a gorgeous black sheen in everything it touches. Essentially it gives you that instagrammable effect without the addition of carbon but actual flavour. The duck egg is noticeable because it is the small cubes of a butter yellow that pops up as you scoop your way through. The texture is very smooth and creamy ... think of it as a butter that has been out of the fridge for an hour. Still lightly firm but easily gives way if you spread it or bite into it. The addition of the salt is just a nice balance to highlight more of the nutty note in the sesame. Overall, the ice cream is sweet but definitely more nuanced than your average scoop anywhere in the city. 4/5 White Rabbit Candy ice cream - I tried this one and found it nice but a bit icier than the black sesame. Not sure what happened there but flavour wise, it's a very milky and creamy pronounced sweet condensed milk. It's a good variation of a millky ice cream if you normally love vanilla. For me, it's plays on my nostalgia more as I remember eating this as a kid during Chinese New Year. I think I'll try the other flavours next time. 3.5/5 One thing I did love and found funny... their container. It's a Chinese take out box instead of a cup... LOL. The scoop is also quite generous. I would say it's more like 1.5 scoops you'll find elsewhere which makes this a great place to get 2 scoops of interesting and innovative flavours and share... Or not. Sorry but not sorry... you can get your own 2 flavours and let me try those other ones to review. If I'm in the area, definitely coming back to try more.
