| - It is very difficult to get me to see a doctor, let alone an ER so when I told my husband I needed to go to the ER, he knew I was in serious pain.
At PVH, I had a long wait, seated in a chair with severe abdominal and mid back pain, tears streaming down my face. When I was finally brought into the exam room I at least was able to lie flat on my side which seemed to help. An aid came in and took my complaint. Next, a PA came in and asked for a urine specimen. Once that was done, I was brought for an X-ray. Next, an admin came in to ask for my payment of the visit (??!!??) . I asked how I could pay for something when they didn't even know what was going on. He said it was based on the average ER visit. As I was paying....literally, he had my card....someone came in with discharge papers and a rx for Naproxen. My diagnosis? Low back pain/spasm. Not once did I complain about pain in my low back. I said "No one is even going to examine me or tell me the results at least of the urine and xray?" I was kind of incredulous. They responded, "No one came in to talk to you?" And went to fetch the PA who had popped in earlier. The PA said, "there was nothing in your urine, and your X-ray only showed mild degenerative changes so you are discharged. Do you have any questions?" She looked so annoyed she had to come back and made me feel so stupid for being there I just shook my head and left.
Back home, still feeling like an idiot and thinking maybe I was over reacting, continued to get worse pain throughout the next day until the next night I couldn't move without stabbing in my back and side. I knew this wasn't a normal spasm because when anything touched the area, it felt like the worst sunburn ever. My husband told me to go to an ER or he was going to call an ambulance. Fine. I damned well wasn't going to PVH again. I went instead to Mayo clinic and so glad I did. That doctor was thorough and understood I was in severe pain and took me seriously. Unlike PVH, he did do an exam of the painful area and identified a rash coming up. He said he thought it was shingles but wanted to rule out kidney stones (please note...not low back pain). Did I have a fever in the last 48 hours? Why yes I did...low grade and something I told PVH as well and they ignored. Had I felt nauseous or vomit in the last 48 hours? Yes...I have been nauseous and in fact hadn't eaten anything that day. Something else PVH ignored. I did get diagnosed with shingles which can be extremely painful and something that does need to be caught right away to minimize permanent nerve damage. Mayo clinic took me seriously and was wonderful in their care. I will never...NEVER...go to Paradise Valley Hospital again.
