"Frank Gehry, You're a genius!"
--Frank Gehry, the Simpsons
The ARCHITECTURE: Seriously, this is one of my favorite buildings that Frank Gehry has done. It's functional, a really cool look, and the design serves the space rather than the other way around. The cool super-skeleton admits a lot of light. The looping staircases are a nice architectural element that enhances the space.
The ART: There are a few rather strong collections here, most notably the work of the Group of Seven artists. There's also a really nice room comparing and contrasting impressionists and proceeding painters both in actual work and display style. The Thomson collection is a mixed bag with some not-so-exciting work mixed in with some really beautiful collections, especially intricate miniature woodcarvings. The overall collection was stronger than I realized at first glance.
The STAFF: I was surprised by the knowledge of the security guards here...they actually know something about the collections in contrast to many other museums I've visited.
TIP: Wednesdays, the museum is free from 6 PM - 8:30 PM. It can be crowded, but wasn't bad this week. Great way to explore for free pre- or post-dinner in Chinatown.
