  • I am by no means a stranger to firearms, but it's been quite a while since I've felt the thrill of full auto. I've had my eye on an AK-47 for my personal collection, but here I wanted something that I'd likely never again have an opportunity to shoot. Since I was coming during the Safari Club International convention, I figured the gun range might be a fairly popular attraction. I had the foresight to call ahead for a lane reservation. The girl who answered was very friendly. She took down all of my info, including the firearms I wanted for my "Build Your Own" package. I had considered the "Big Fifties" package, but I already own a Desert Eagle, so that seemed like kind of a waste. My "Build Your Own" package came with 1 pistol and 3 different rifles, shotguns, or submachine guns of my choosing. I went with the Smith & Wesson 500 (5 rounds), FN P90 (25 rounds), M249 SAW (25 rounds), and Barrett M95 (5 rounds). With the upcharges for the big guns, it came to $349. Money well spent. The P90 is a truly unique bullpup. It's like something out of Starship Troopers or Halo. This gun was very ergonomic and easy to handle, not to mention incredibly fun to shoot. I've been wanting a Smith & Wesson 500 for a while now. I've fired dad's .460 a few times, but I wanted to see how different the 500 would be. Wow, this thing has some massive recoil, especially since I picked the model without a ported barrel. Holding the belt-fed M249 SAW made me feel like John Rambo (I know he uses an M60, but still). The SAW fired effortlessly, with almost no recoil whatsoever. I'd love to own one of these. The coup de grace was the Barrett .50 BMG. Strip Gun Club's website advertises a Barrett M95, but I'm almost positive the rifle they laid out for me was actually a Barrett M107A1. I'm glad, because I'd much rather shoot the M107A1 than the bullpup M95 anyway. The Barrett didn't have nearly as much recoil as I anticipated, with maybe just a little more than my .300 Weatherby Mag. This was an absolutely incredible experience. The guy assisting us was friendly and upbeat the entire time. He encouraged a lot of photos and video time to capture the memories. I also appreciated that he took the time to explain how each gun functioned and some helpful shooting and stance tips. I never felt rushed at all. At the end, he gave me my targets and all of my brass to take home for souvenirs. I can't emphasize enough how fantastic Strip Gun Club is. Next time I'm in Vegas, I'm coming here to tackle the Browning M3 (assuming I can win enough at the tables to cover it).
