| - I hired Happy Handyman to get my rental back on the market. I needed to replace the carpet, but also wanted to freshen up the place by painting, adding accent walls and replacing the dated ceiling fans in the bedrooms. I also requested new baseboards, but that took me out of budget.
The first meeting with Brad went great. He really knows his stuff, which made me feel comfortable to trust him with my project. He said that the project would be done in 3 days, and it was only going to take that long because I asked for accent walls and he needed one day to let the paint dry on the main walls before he did the accent walls. That night he gave me an estimate, which I happily accepted. I found that the estimate was reasonable because it includes all materials.
My first disappointment was that when I was contacted from his office to collect the first half and start the project in my rental, I had to wait a week for availability. This was setting me back from putting the rental on the market, but I made the conscious decision to hire Happy Handyman anyway. After all, the project would only take 3 days.
While the estimate included materials, and I had given a general description of what I wanted, I still had not been asked for exact paint brand, color or texture. Same thing with the carpet and ceiling fans. I asked the office staff, Melissa, when I'd be contacted to provide them with the info while she processed the first half of the payment and her response was, "um, we'll call you later to get that from you." Honestly, she did not sound confident. I did, however, provide her with the combination of the lockbox to let the crew in Monday morning (7/13/2015).
A week goes by, and I finally get a call from the crew at 9 am. They're standing outside the vacant condo wondering if I may give them the code to the lockbox and the colors to paint. Also, he wanted to know which were the accent walls.
I was very unimpressed and quite upset. I was in the middle of something important at work and I'm getting calls from these jerks at the doorstep without a single clue of apparently anything that I had talked about with Brad. How is a contractor going to show up on the first day of the job and not come prepared!? And where was Brad? On vacation in the outback of Montana where he didn't have cell phone service, so he claimed.
After that phone call on the first day, I decided to stop in during my lunch hour to make sure that everything was status quo. As soon as I walked in the door, the condo felt like the frozen food aisle at the grocery store. I specifically told Greg, the painter, that I wanted the temp to be set and left at 80. They agreed to my terms and conditions.
On the 4th day, I show up to clean the condo.
1. The AC had not been set to 80 and had been left at 75 for who knows how long. Possibly since Monday when I went and told Greg to set it and leave it at 80. This upset me very much!!!
2. The carpet had not been replaced.
3. The ceiling fans had been replaced with the cheapest, most hideous white fans on the market.
4. The paint job was slightly better than having it done myself. There's noticeable bleeding from the accent walls to the ceiling. I was expecting crisp, clean and straight lines. The accent wall in the living/dining area connected to the kitchen is not straight.
I immediately called the office and there was no answer. I called every 30 minutes for 3 hours....no answer.
When Brad finally got back to civilization, another week later, he got his "carpet guy" to replace the carpet. He also replaced the ceiling fans with the ones of my choice. Apologized for the AC complaint, but did not offer any kind of discount or reimbursement for his crew's dismissal of my request to not cost me more on electric.
Finally, a week late (they promised 3 days and it took 10) the project was complete.
I returned to inspect and clean and found that when the closet doors were removed to replace the carpet, they were not set back correctly. The doors slide and close, but they have gaps when they are shut, which were not there before.
I'm not at all impressed. I give this company 2 stars. Their inter office communication is terrible and even worse with the client. As far as I concerned, you can't leave them alone. They need constant supervision or they'll crank down your AC and do a wishy washy job.
Hire them at your own risk. I'm never going to.
