| - I took a hot yoga class here one weekday as part of the Passport to Prana pass. Balanced Life is conveniently located right by the 401 for Eastenders, and the building is rather easy to spot, since there is not much else around.
They have a large space on the second floor, and everything seems new, and maybe even a little sparse, but upon entry I didn't feel like I was walking in a yoga studio. I'd give them a little slack, however, since it's one of the very few studios in the East part of the GTA.
I'm constantly alarmed, however, with a very small number of studios that offer hot yoga without having shower facilities on the premises. It not only is inconvenient, but it's a hazard for those who must then encounter smelly yogis after class. Balanced Life is unfortunately, one of these studios.
There is also no real changeroom. The 'changing' must be done in one of the two washrooms, which also double up as their storage space. Thankfully, however, everything is extremely clean.
The yoga class was one of the most memorable ever. Not so great in their case. I may be blissfully not 'with it', but when I think of yoga, I think of tranquility, peace and relaxation. This abominal yoga class began with pop music by artists like Black Eyed Peas (their club songs), Lady Gaga (*not* the acoustic versions...!) and K'naan, all with the bass blaring. It was extremely difficult to find peace in any of my positions, let alone attempt a steady Ujjayi breath rhythmn. In fact, my friend and I couldn't stop laughing out of shock when the music first started playing.
Towards the end of the practice, the instructor offered a small neck massage. I had no idea that the massage would be done using muscle numbing cream, like tiger balm. I find it totally counterproductive to numb your muscles after yoga, since the entire point of yoga is to be more aware of your body & surroundings. If muscles are sore, I'd rather be aware of that.
All in all, this could be a more than moderate yoga studio if they make some important changes.
