  • So I've been here just under a year and will definitely not be renewing my lease. I give 2 stars strictly because the community is peaceful and the majority of the people are friendly and quiet. Of course one of my neighbors is the complete opposite and he never seems to understand / care, but that's besides the point. Here's the biggest problem - these apartments are over 20 years old, and that means lots of problems. Problems I didn't realize until after I moved in. The walls, windows and front door are all paper thin. There's also zero insulation. That of course means your electric bill will be thru the roof. I also live on a 2nd floor end unit, which really makes things worse. In the summer, my AC is running almost constantly - and I have it set in the mid 80's!! If you can't tolerate that like I can and prefer something in the 70's like most people, you can easily expect your electric bill most likely in the $350 - 400 range. However, on extremely hot days (like 115 - 120), my place won't even go lower than 83 even if I wanted it to. And it'll just run all day. In the winter, it's the exact same scenario. I ended up buying a space heater for my bedroom and just accepting really cold temperatures throughout the rest of the place, simply to save money. A few other points: - If you choose an end unit, except to hear literally everything. Every car that goes by, people's conversations outside, etc. - Valet Trash is mandatory. It costs $25 a month, and there's absolutely no way of opting out. I've actually never used it. I don't like it, but I'm stuck throwing away that money each month. That's my fault, but just something else to keep in mind. - This place is known for having issues with bugs. I can't tell you how many times I've found a scorpion, centipede or spider, always in my bathroom. It's now routine to check every inch every time I go in. - Speaking of my bathroom, being how old this apartment is, there isn't even a fan. However there is one -- only it's across the way where the washer and dryer is... It turns on if you turn the light on. That honestly makes no sense at all. - I know Mark Taylor in general has gotten overall good reviews for being a good management company, but with the maintenance people that work for Dakota, I can't understand why. They're seemingly nice guys, and I don't really blame them personally; I think it's more an issue of how Mark Taylor wants them to work. And what I mean by that of course is that they're cheap! Saving a dollar is their top priority and that was proven to me on 3 separate occasions. My first issue was with my front door. A) because it's so old, it doesn't even sit even anymore. It slopes down. B) The weather stripping was almost non-existent. So one night it rained very hard. I woke up with literally puddles of water on my floor. I called and they sent someone out to fix it. Or so I thought. Long story short, the guy looked at it for 2 minutes and actually told me that there was nothing he could do! He simply told me that no more rain was in the foreseeable forecast and left. A while later I finally had them come out and replace the weather stripping because I could see sunlight thru my door. A guy came out and did a pretty good job, only the material he used was as cheap as it gets. I ended up going out, buying my own and taking care of it myself. Though, I should mention, it's done nothing to help with my electric bill. And finally, I had an issue with my toilet. The water wouldn't stop running. It needed a new handle. A guy came out and instead of doing the right thing and simply replacing the handle, he tried every half-ass trick in the book to "fix" it. Of course it wasn't working. He finally ended up replacing the handle and it was fixed! I'm just over it. And I'd recommend to anyone shopping for an apartment to look elsewhere.
