| - Long gone are the days when Lux would have something called Tango Tuesdays, which were Argentine tango lessons being taught right in this here coffeeshop.
That's right. Tango lessons.
A bunch of chairs and tables would be moved back to create an ideal milonga space. Depressed Mode would fade out for the dramatic strains of Astor Piazzolla. And this random couple would appear out of nowhere and start dancing in the middle of the room while the other 4 people sitting around (me included) would continue working on their laptops or studying. This would go on for about an hour. Every Tuesday.
That was circa 5 years ago, and I never saw anyone else ever get up to tango. Which is probably why it eventually stopped. A missed opportunity, in hindsight. I could have made major headway in Phoenix's numerous tango halls. Alas.
Today, Lux is even more bustling than it used to be (sometimes overly so). A full-on Apple army on every table and couch inside, while actual human interaction (aka talking to your friend) is mostly reserved for the outdoor tables.
But long gone are the days of being treated by an oftenly complained about surly cooler-than-thou barista. Don't get me wrong. There are still cool baristas working there. But service has been consistently excellent and friendly for quite a while now to every customer that walks in. They also still make great coffee product (caffeinated soy lattes and decaffed Americanos are my usuals nowadays - and apart from one bad mishap years ago, the espresso is always done just right and the soy is never curdled or burnt).
Doing work or studying here - well, that more or less depends on you and whether you can shut out the loud music and continuous cacophony. For me, at times it gets to be too much and I eventually pack up and move to somewhere quieter, and yet other times it all just clicks and I plow right through my work despite all the noise. So take that for what you will.
But as for the music, regardless of the noise level, there's always great stuff on board. And sometimes the most random. Most recent example: a steady stream of Hot Chip tracks followed by "Party All The Time" by one Eddie Murphy. Sadly, I was the only one in the entire place old enough to recognize and truly appreciate this unexpected masterpiece. But it served its purpose.
As Lux continuously does, a longstanding gem of a coffeehouse in the expanses of the Arizona desert.
It may no longer have a lone couple awkwardly dancing tango in its midst, but it does serve a pre-bust and pre-Pluto Nash Eddie Murphy crooning overhead for your listening pleasure.
It's the important things.
