  • During this time of year, September, it gets so hot in Vegas, you see people burst into flames just stepping into the sunlight. I've seen it happen. Lucky for me, I had s'mores ready to go so it wasn't for naught For the rest of us that cherish being flame retardant, staying alive means you need to constantly reduce that body temperature. So the last place I would think of going to do that is a place called Volcano Cafe. Boy, I'm glad my sense of logic is crap because this place is exactly what you need to stay cool. This place is located in a Korean shopping center filled with a grocery store, and tons of little eateries that harken back to the motherland. If you're Korean that is. And this place is a pretty typical Korean style cafe, complete with k-pop music blaring in the background, Korean magazines that look manhandled, and Korean staff that look bored AF surfing the net on their phone, until they see you come in and then instantly kick into good service mode. There are 2 things worth getting here. I say this because this is the exact 2 things I get. So don't ask me about the rest of their menu because I would just make it up, like I do with my reports at work. First, get the Fish Cake. Which isn't really a fish nor is it really a cake. I would say that it's a bad Google translation, which is too bad because I'm sure non-Koreans are probably thinking this thing must taste like a Filet-O-Fish with chocolate icing. But really it tastes like a Hot Pocket filled with red beans shaped like a fish. You know what, that probably sound equally as unappetizing, so let's just skip to the next thing. Shaved Ice. Now there are all sorts of shaved ice combinations out there from Hawaiian style to Taiwanese style. I'm rather unclear if what I had could be considered Korean style, but since it helped reduced the risk of spontaneous combustion, I was gung ho about it. The ice shaving is made from some sort of ice cream concoction, so it's extra creamy. People referred to it as Bingsu, so I'm guessing there's an actual name for this. Where things get crazy are the toppings. Lots of fruit that felt random in combination, a hunkin' plop of red bean glazed with sweetened condensed milk, and then for whatever reason cereal scattered across the top. Like Fruity Pebbles. Maybe they ran out of sprinkles or nuts or maybe that's just how this works. I basked in my ignorance and just smashed the whole thing into my face. That was nom nom yummy. And I lived another day, ready with my s'mores to roast on some other unfortunate Vegas citizen who stepped into the blazing sun. - John Master Lee
