  • I love Thai food. It is possibly my favorite cuisine. But this place doesn't even seem to have half of my favorite dishes. Am I missing something in calling this place a Thai restaurant? I asked if it was possible to order off-menu--most authentic chefs can easily whip up a batch of X if it's 100% within-genre. That was shut down immediately. For example, pineapple fried rice. I was told pineapple could be added to the fried rice. But that's not what makes pineapple fried rice the amazingness that it is. And, really, who believes that Pad Thai is the national dish? That's like saying the French actually call the potato product "French Fries". Uh-huh... So, no way to get 4 stars if I cannot get standard dishes like panang or even yellow curry at a place that considers itself Thai. But, the maximum three stars are achieved due to (1) the very upscale ambiance--how many real Thai places feel fancy? none!--and (2) that the food was good. (1) We were seated immediately. The waiter was such a good sport about "no ice" in my water. Our appetizer plates were removed right away. We were offered dessert but not in a pushy manner. When we requested the check, splitting it was offered automatically which was great! And when I put my cc in the folder and held it up, the waiter came and picked it up in half a second. The service really was excellent. But it was cold. Like really cold. Like my food got cold before I was even 3/4 done with my meal. Yeah, that's not cool... Also, why wasn't I offered chopsticks??? (2) The food was good, but I definitely wouldn't say amazing. The tofu was good but half of that is because it was fully fried! I mean, if you fry it, it will taste better, but the dish shouldn't rely on that fact. The noodles had a nice, chewy texture but still were easy to eat--even after they got COLD! The broccoli was just the right size and firmness--I didn't have to cut or fight with anything on my plate. (I got the pad see yew with tofu but next time I'd order it with extra broccoli and a half order of protein or just extra egg.) There was some kind of shredded cabbage mound off to the side of my plate. I'm not sure why it was there, other than to take up space. It in no way could have passed for a salad and was too much for a garnish. That was just a little odd, really. My friend had the green curry which looked a little watery to me, but I didn't try it. Also, I didn't see an option or offer for sticky or brown rice. Looked like just the standard steamed jasmine rice. I'll have to explore that next time when I do a curry. Since this place is so convenient, I suspect I'll be ordering take-out or stopping in with co-workers again. But otherwise, consider me on-the-prowl for real Thai food. P.S. There were kids at the table next to us. I'm going to call this place NOT good-for-kids. The kids seemed miserable--struggled to find something to eat and then to eat it including moments of flailing and lying down (going limp, really) on the seats, the parents seemed harried about it, and the waitstaff was awkward about it. It was all around unfortunate.
