| - My first time at The Unknown and Passport Pizza was a great time, with one small exception.
It's a pretty typical layout of a Charlotte brewery: a nice patio with an open warehouse layout inside. You can see the beer in the making behind some windows, which is where I believe they host their fitness classes. It was a Thursday and trivia was wrapping up at 8:30PM. The place was busy but not packed - the perfect vibe. Most people were seated outside, many with pizza and many with dogs as well.
I got the Dirty Commie Heathen beer which was delicious. It's super smooth and syrupy without the density that often comes with a dark beer (my preferred style). I was really happy with it!
If you're getting Passport, you order at the bar, not the truck. I had looked at the menu online and was super excited about the potato pizza crusts, but when I got there, those crusts weren't on the menu and I was informed that they've never actually served those crusts because they haven't found a way to make it work. OK, not the end of the world. Their "Original" crust is delicious!
So I order the Lebanese pizza and ask for no chicken (vegetarian of five years here). The bartender tells me they don't make modifications and I should "pick it off." I said I don't eat meat and I'm just asking for it not to be included. I felt so challenged on what I feel is a pretty simple request - every one of Passport's pizzas have meat on them and I doubt I was the first vegetarian to ask for no meat. He acquiesces and says he will ask the Passport guys to exclude the chicken, which they happily did. Great! And the pizza was delicious! The bartender also made a rude comment when I went to pay, offering to let my male friend pay for me when I had asked to pay separately. I have never felt so brushed off by a bartender, especially not at a brewery where the atmosphere is always famously relaxed.
But, as I said, I enjoyed every other aspect and I'm sure I'll be back! Hopefully Passport adds some veggie-friendly pizza to the game soon enough :)
