| - I've been putting off writing this review because I go there so often and love the selection of beers, but the food has more often than not been worthy of only 3 stars. So why the 4 star review?
Houghs pays attention.
I'd been hearing about a new menu debut from servers for a long while, and finally saw the changes over the past few months. Many of the items that I wasn't so fond of in the past were off the menu (someone, somewhere is keeping track of the unpopular items which is great). They added multiple new wing flavors, a larger selection of smoked items, and a few other new sandwiches and salads. They've also given the people more of what they want - brunch! Previously served only on Sunday's, they've now added on a Saturday brunch as well. Now, for the remainder of my review...
The bright side:
- insane beer selection. Insane. The Brewery of the Month idea? Genius. I've tried a number of hard-to-find brews from some of my favorite breweries as a result. They also have numerous events each month related to the brewery - usually trivia night winner swag, special brunches, etc. I have even taken friends who don't like beer and they still find something to fit their taste (usually a fruitier brew). This is what keeps me coming back and keeps others curious.
- Certain menu items are consistent and tasty (fried chicken sandwich, veggie chorizo sandwich)
- The environment (for the most part) is welcoming, noisy without being too loud, and fun. And if that isn't the most GD gorgeous wooden bar top, then I dunno what is.
- Great Bloody Mary bar during brunch AND they serve you a Miller High Life pony bottle alongside. That's just fun and fantastic. (Luckily, I live within walking distance haha)
My gripes:
- Someone behind the concept of Hough's is head-over-heels in love with beer, but it is not the people serving me my beer. Don't get me wrong, the service is always friendly and I've never had a problem. It is just odd that such a beer centric place doesn't have waitstaff that are singing the praises of the brews
- the place needs a hostess/host. I know it's "sit wherever" style and I like that relaxed feel and it works great for non-busy hours. But dinner time on a Friday night? A hostess is necessary. I think it is a turn-off for older people or newcomers when they enter a crowded place with nobody to direct them
- The place all but shuts down once the kitchen closes. It is off-putting if you are sitting at the bar enjoying beers when all the tables around the bar have the seats overturned and ready for close. I'm sure that is part of the closing duties for the servers, but I wish there was a way around it. This is the kind of place where people SHOULD be welcome to drink until close, even if the kitchen is closed.
