| - Why is this place not packed every night of the week?! Station is truly a gem - hands down the best meal I have had all year from start to finish. It is not a cheap place, but it is absolutely worth every penny. We did the $40 three course tasting menu. Tasting isn't the right word - it's a full meal. I had expected tiny portions based on some of the reviews and the overall style of the menu, but actually found the portions to be ample and left full and happy.
I started with the roasted carrot salad with fresh cheese, harissa, pomegranate curd, chickpea fritter, and watercress. The carrots were roasted to perfection and all of the ingredients in the dish worked together to make a well balanced and filling starter. My companions went with the beet and fig salad. The server explained when we ordered that the figs didn't look great that day and so the chef was substituting plums. While they were disappointed about the missing figs initially, they both thoroughly enjoyed the salad. Clean plates all around.
Second course was a medium rare short rib entrée, which wasn't on the regular menu, but was an option on the tasting menu. I can't remember all the bits in the menu description; but again, I was pleasantly surprised by the dish and it's sophistication. I expected a hunk of braised short rib and some veggies/potatoes, which is what you usually get when you order short rib. What I got was an artfully arranged array with a decent portion of sliced short rib that was cooked just right. It looked as good as it tasted and we all cleaned our plates.
Third course was a lavender pound cake with poached pineapple and coconut pudding. Again, the portion was ample and the dish was beautiful. It was tasty too - a strange and creative combo of flavors that really worked well in the end. My companions got the popcorn panna cotta, which was also delightful. The panna cotta was just the right texture and the popcorn topping added some contrast. Neither dessert was overly sweet, which I appreciated. My only suggestion on the entire meal would be that the jar the panna cotta is served in is a little awkward. It would be easier to eat if it were shorter and wider, spreading out the popcorn topping a bit.
Service was top notch from the bar to the table. Our server was well-matched to the place - with poise and polish, but not stuffy arrogance. We will be back, that's for sure!
