| - I'm very conflicted about Pamplemousse. My dining companions and I selected this restaurant as part of the Restaurant Week fundraising effort in Las Vegas for Three Square. Their prix fixe Restaurant Week dinner menu was $50/person, and did afford several choices for each course. The restaurant is really stuck in the 70s - decor, service, and location. The first course was a crudite basket, served with a dijon vinaigrette dipping sauce for each person. It was a little odd, because the pieces of vegetables were very large and a little unwieldy, and I think all of us would have preferred a simple salad course with the delicious vinaigrette. For the second course, both my dining companions had the Feuillete of French forest mushrooms and asparagus, and I had the Bouche de Fruit de Mer. The Feullete was quite hearty with a large portion of pastry. The Bouche was smaller in portion size, but the seafood did not taste as fresh as I would expect. As a note, all the sauces served with each course were very good. The pear sorbet palate cleanser was so-so - not much flavor. Both my dining companions had the Steak Bavette for their main course. The pommes frites served with the steak were obviously frozen. This resulted in a rather humorous discussion with our waiter, who implied the pommes frites (NOT french fries, he told us haughtily) were freshly made in house. My companions were also emphatically told that the temperature of the beef was up to the CHEF and the customer has NO choice. It was served VERY rare, which I don't think is most people's preference for beef. I had the Veal Medallions a la Plancha with wild rice. The veal and accompanying cognac cream sauce was VERY good - the best thing I had all evening. The wild rice was a very ordinary presentation and ordinarily flavored. I had their "famous" Grand Marnier Souffle for dessert, and was distinctly underwhelmed as the Grand Marnier flavor was so subtle to be almost nonexistent. My companions both had the Chocolate Mousse, and seemed to enjoy their selection. We all agreed afterwards that there was nothing in the meal that gave any of us the "wow" factor, which is why I have rated it two stars. Our table was near the waiter's station, and I can't believe the waiters don't realize that we - and other customers - can hear their bickering, their phone calls, and their profit reports to the owner all throughout our meal. All in all, I wouldn't go again, nor would I recommend it to others. There are other Las Vegas French restaurants that are excellent, and a better value for your money.
