| - Great steaks, but extremely pricey so bring your checkbook.
We had $100 in gift cards to Fleming's so after visiting the Scottsdale Art Walk recently we decided to stop in for dinner. The food was delicious, but like all upscale steak houses, everything is a-la carte. Steaks are $50 and up and your sides start at $12 and go up from there. We started with an appetizer of calamari, then I had a bone-in ribeye and my wife had the New York strip. For sides we had the brussel sprouts and bacon and the lobster mashed potatoes. Because it was a Thursday night, my wife stuck with water and I had one IPA. I will say that everything was delicious and very well prepared and the service was excellent.
However, the whole setting was very generic. Fleming's is locally owned, but if you'd blindfolded me I couldn't have told you if I was in a Morton's, Ruth's Chris or Capital Grille. Even the beer selection was generic. Yes, they carry a lot of wine, but how about offering some local craft beer as well? My IPA was a Sam Adams Rebel which is decent, but something I could find anywhere.
I also take issue with how much they charge just to cook a piece of meat. Yes, I realize that's how steakhouses work, but when I'm paying that much for food I like to know that the chef actually worked to put ingredients together.
So how much was it? Well after tip our $100 gift cards barely covered half of the bill. I can't even imagine what it would be if we had ordered more drinks or a bottle of wine.
Sure, this is a great place if you're on an expense account or just want something generic, but I also appreciate the experience so next time I want a steak I'll choose Durant's or The Stockyards.
