  • I decided to take the hour drive from the Strip to do a little nature exploring. Fletcher Canyon's trailhead is on the right side of the 157 (just before the Visitor's Center) and there's a small parking area on the left side of the road for about 15 cars. Though the lot was mostly full on a Tuesday morning at 9a, the trail is long enough that you'll certainly get alone time on your hike. Signs indicate that Fletcher Canyon's out-and-back trail is 1.6 mi each way, but it's definitely longer so plan for about a 4.5 mi roundtrip. The terrain is rocky throughout - be prepared for some ankle rolling! Since I came on a whim, I was just wearing my running shoes but I recommend high-ankle hiking boots. The trail is an easy, very gradual uphill climb of about 1000ft, and there's plenty of shade throughout. Even though it's spring, there's no water running through this part of canyon at the moment. The only wildlife I noticed was a huge jackrabbit the size of a medium-sized dog - it totally took me by surprise! Being a Cali girl, I'm used to seeing our cute lil tiny wild bunnies, but this thing was like six times the size with massive tall ears. It hopped away too quickly for a photo, but it got me thinking about how big it's predators must be...
