Hula's is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Phoenix. Who would have known that I would have discovered an affinity for Hawaiian (Polynesian) food in the desert?
This is definitely a place to eat outside. They have a big central fire-pit and a bar area that opens to their dining patio. Yes, it overlooks the light rail and busy central street, but the food, drink and atmosphere make you practically forget you are in the middle of a crowded city. The crowd is usually bustling with people of all ages. Very kid friendly too despite a decently heavy drinking atmosphere.
The food is great - easily some of the freshest and tastiest fish in town (made more impressive given how far we are from the ocean). I can NEVER get enough of the tuna sandwich. Johnny Cakes are a fun spin on cornbread, and I highly recommend ordering some to the table, along with fish bites. If you are a pork fan, the options are numerous. The sides (typically rice and beans or fries) are always a bit bland, but the sandwiches and main dishes are top notch. I know they have a brunch menu too, but I don't really remember it well from the one time I attended.
The drinks are the true star of the show. This is the only place I have been to where I have enjoyed a rum-based drink. They also have some tasty vodka creations. But my favorite is the Scorpion Bowl! 2-4 can share right out of the tiki-styled receptacle with fun neon-covered straws. The drink acts as a moat around a flame in the center. And people, nothing is more fun than drinking around an open flame.
Tiki's is a really fun and unique restaurant. I love it to pieces. Make sure it's on your list, especially if you enjoy a fruity and well-made mixed drink.
