| - The Clarion Hotel looks more impressive from outside than in. It is a 3 or 4 floor hotel that feels like a renovated B&B on the east side of Toronto.
The Good:
- The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the subway/train station. This also means that is about two stops (5 minutes) from downtown Toronto.
- About half of the hotel is renovated. If you happen to get a room in the renovated section, it is actually quite nice (minus the bathroom).
- There is breakfast included.
- There is parking included, though I would advise to get there earlier as it does fill up fast.
- It is about a 10 minute walk to cabbage town.
- The beds and rooms in the renovated section are actually very nice (except the bathrooms).
The Bad:
We had two rooms in the hotel. Both were in the newly renovated section, though we found out that one of the rooms did not have hot water. This resulted in our second group being moved to the older section of the hotel. I was told that the older section is not worth the money paid. If I can give one piece of advice, it would be to request the newer renovated section or do not stay here.
The people working the front desk were equally frustrating. When we initially arrived, we wanted to find the room number of our other party. The concierge would under no circumstances give this information out, even though the other party had paid for both of our rooms. Since our cell phones did not work in Toronto, we had no way of communicating or finding out which room our other group was in. The concierge eventually called the other room and in the process we identified the room number. Why this information was guarded so carefully is beyond me.
We also put down a credit card for incidentals, as did our other group. We asked the concierge to charge both rooms to a single card when checking out, a request that was accepted. After arriving back in the US, we found out that the hotel charged both cards for the full price of both rooms. Thus we were double charged. This is just another item that a customer should not have to deal with :(
About half of the hotel is renovated. This is very clear (see photos). It seems that in their haste to renovate the rooms, they did some strange things like put the toilet right against the wall. This means you can only use it while sitting sideways (see photo) ????
Also, the curtain in our bedroom was stapled shut at the top for some odd reason. When we opened the curtain, there was clearly a disgusting dirty rag outside on the window sill.
Finally, on the day we were checking out, we found a mystery black bag left on our door handle. I reluctantly tried to see what it was, and if felt like a bottle of something, however we didn't want to venture any further.
This hotel is about a 10 minute walk from cabbage town, though in my opinion, all of the things mentioned above should be enough reason to avoid this hotel in general.
