| - When I visited for Sunday Brunch three years ago, it was so wonderful! I'm sad to say I didn't visit again, but I spoke highly of my experience and had every intention on returning. I remember the freshness of the sashimi most of all and the extremely talented sushi chefs available. The other dishes and breakfast pastries were tasty as well. Oh, and the view of the pool is nice. I don't recall hating anything.
My most recent visit was on 06/04/13 with the whole family. I was excited to come back and have everyone else try it as well. Our server was phenomenal. So personable, really great with everyone, and very attentive. I really like the atmosphere of the restaurant - fancy, but not too fancy with modern and fun decor.
My fiance and I started with the Spanish Octopus appetizer (grilled octopus, charred potatoes, sweet peppers, lemoncello vinaigrette). The octopus didn't seem fresh or perhaps not cooked properly, so the texture wasn't amazing. The flavors were just okay. I was disappointed. We also ordered a salad for the table; Roasted Cauliflower Burrata with duck salami, aged balsamic, pine nut brittle. This was really good. I loved the roasted cauliflower, the salami was light, burrata was creamy, and the brittle was a nice touch.
The entrees and sides: Big Eye Tuna (seared and served with summer vegetable mint quinoa, finished with jalapeño cilantro cream), Gemelli Bolognaise (housemade ricotta cheese, fresh basil made with beef, veal and lamb), Morrow Bay Black Cod (bacon cider vinaigrette, salad of chile shrimp & baby greens), Mama Simon's Meatloaf (mashed potatoes, succotash made with beef and veal), Red Thai Curry (Kaffir lime, pineapple chutney, jasmine rice, with shrimp), Truffled Mac & Cheese with Lobster, and Signature Crispy Sesame Rice with Spicy Tuna.
The tuna was just meh. Quality, flavor all lacked. The cod was also just okay, meatloaf wasn't flavorful and a bit dry, and the mac & cheese was overwhelmingly truffle. The best entree of the group was the pasta. I thought the bolognaise was delicious and I love the topping of ricotta. The spicy tuna with crispy rice was amazing. I should have just ordered sushi!
We ordered three desserts for the table. Sorbet Trio of Raspberry, Mango, and Lemon and two others (can't remember their names). One was a chocolate pudding cake I think with ice cream or gelato. The other dessert was like a deep-fried apple pie? There was caramel and a delicious salted caramel ice cream/gelato. They were delicious. The sorbet was refreshing. They also brought us the Simon Junk Food dessert platter (brownies, caramel corn, Sno Balls, Rice Krispie treats, Cup Cakes, cookies, cotton candy). It was definitely more fun than tasty. The cotton candy was good!
Overall, the meal was pretty disappointing. No one was extremely pleased or blown away by their entrees. Partnered with the high prices, I doubt anyone plans to return. I might give the brunch another go or at least just stick to the delicious sushi/sashimi. But everything is so hit or miss that I'm not sure it's worth the risk.
