We came for dinner to celebrate our friend's birthday. Easy to find within Bellagio and with nice elegant decor but unfortunately no view of the fountain outside. Overall the dinner was a hit and miss and I'll give you the highlights here.
Wine: Quite an extensive selection like more nice restaurant in Vegas. I was looking at a bottle of Brunello and asked our waiter what he thought. His response was "Oh that's a nice Super Tuscan... mix of Sangiovese and Cab". I know he wasn't the sommelier but please train your waiters to know the wines a little. Everything he said was simply not true. I just went with my own decision, ended up being a good bottle.
Unfortunately for my own meal, seems with going with our waiter's suggestions were just mistakes. I got the Phyllo Crusted Sole on his recommendation. This appeared to be by far the weakest entree of our entire table. It's really just a breaded sole filet over some mashed potatoes. In taste, creativity and presentation, I expect this to be served at a $$ restaurant, not at Michael Mina.
Should have learned my lesson but I went with the suggested coconut tapioca for dessert. It's just a bowl of tapioca and some coconut flavoring and some mini fruit pearls on top. The colors were pretty but taste quite subpar. To make up for the fact the lackluster ingredients, the serving was unappetizingly huge.
Reason for still giving them 3 stars. They were able to accommodate my off-menu request of a seared foie gras appetizers. It was a large serving, well cooked and I enjoyed the jams that came with it. The rest of the party seemed to like their food. Standouts there include the Ahi Tuna Tartare that is mixed at the table, as well as the (albeit very expensive) Lobster Pot Pie that was painstakingly presented and served tableside.
The last thing I was disappointed with was the fact that even though I mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday on my reservation on OT, there was no acknowledgement at all during our dinner. I actually decided against calling in ahead of time because I figured they would see that online comment as most other fine dining establishments I've been to in the past have and do something special on their own initiative.
So as you can see, my dining experience at Michael Mina definitely did not live up to expectation as I really like Pabu in Boston. There are many other options on the Strip for a great meal.
