  • I wanted to like this place. First impressions were what a dump. I feel bad for places like this because the people are nice and I hate to see small businesses fail. I think in another location and some redecorating this place could survive, but let's be honest. The restaurant business is one that does not allow for many mistakes. In the case of this place the first mistake is obviously location. First up. Parking is convenient because it's large and not many people want to park in this neighborhood - Oakey/Wyoming and Western. Inside is really weirdly decorated. Purple walls and carpet that looks like it was a remnant from an imploded casino. The ceiling looks like this place has been around for 30 years as various businesses. It;s also not really clean and there is a strong odor when you first walk in the door. Yikes. It's strangely set up with a counter in the center and booths all around the outside. They have a surprising amount if square footage for a sandwich shop. Service was slow. Nobody greeted us and we pretty much seated ourselves. There was no sign that said seat yourself. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. Not really speedy which could be the cook's fault, but pleasant. I got the impression they are not used to getting many customers walk in the door. On to the food. We ordered two sandwiches. The bread were basically sections of baguettes. Baguettes are a kind of bread that need to be really fresh. Day old baguettes are not acceptable for a sandwich shop, and these were clearly not baked this morning. We ordered ours dressed which means lettuce and tomato which were sub-par in my opinion. The fillings in the sandwiches included oysters, fish, and shrimp. The oysters were good, but perhaps a little overcooked. The fish and shrimp were also good. The cole slaw and sweet potato fries were probably better than the sandwich. Now don't get me wrong. These sandwiches were better than a chain store sandwich because quite honestly any real fried seafood beat cold cuts in a sandwich any day. The fried Okra was much better than the average fried okra. On the other hand the fried items seemed to be fried in oil that needed to be changed a couple of days ago. There was a somewhat off taste. Not bad, but like I said maybe with some fresh oil and fresher bread it would have been a better experience. OK I had to go back and add something good about the place that I had forgotten. The Beignet were awesome. I would go there over a donut shop just for these. Four for about $4 and worth every penny. These alone are worth the trip. Service size was adequate. The price for a seafood po-boy was in the $10-15 range which I think is reasonable for seafood - especially since it includes fries and cole slaw. I'll give this place another try in a few months if they are still there.
