  • Why 5 stars? Because I've yet to find anything else stateside that comes this close to reproducing the taquerias that I frequented for years in southern Mexico (Morelos and Guerrero). Tacos al pastor have gained in popularity, and you can find them across the valley. It's the lesser known cousins of southern Mexican cuisine that I keep coming back to Martinez Taco Bar for. Here I've found long-lost primos like huaraches and sopes, tacos with grilled nopales, and the list goes on. This place also does a good job balancing authenticity and quality. There are a few places that also serve some authentic southern Mexican fare here, but often the quality is more like the lower end taquerias that I knew back in Mexico. The places that shine with flavor and quality seem to do so by "fusion" (think TexMex or SoCal tacos/burritos). I'm not discrediting Mexican-American fusion foods. I grew up in the Southwest and absolutely love it. But sometimes I want a place that will take me back to the best street-side taquerias I would stumble upon in Mexico, and no place does it like Martinez Taco Bar. The staff have always been very friendly. Just tonight, the young woman behind the counter patiently listened to my daughter tell her all about our planned trip to Mount Charleston for snow tubing. It was close to closing, and I know she could have been doing other things to get ready to close up the shop for the night. My daughter doesn't really like Mexican food, but she asked if we could go back sometime because "that lady was so nice." The only problem I see with this taco bar is that it needs more traffic. I'm really hoping that this small, local business can get the traffic they need to keep serving up some of the best, authentic food I've had the pleasure of purchasing.
