| - 2016-12-25. Uncle Tetsu's is the place that always has a 1 hour wait if you're at their downtown location on Bay just north of Dundas. I've never had enough patience to wait for it so it's been on my bucket list... until today...
Here's what I know of about Uncle Tetsu Japanese Cheesecake Cafes: It flopped in nearby Hong Kong and China, but became a huge craze in Australia. The Toronto location followed suit.
The premise of Uncle Tetsu's Cheesecakes are that they light, fluffy, and tasty. They are baked in batches of 12, and require 20 minutes to cook. With the lineups out the door and averaging 1 hour, they're pretty much made to order. When there is a line, you're limited to one cake per person which is very fair of Uncle Tetsu. The Cheesecakes go for $10 apiece. The only other item on their menu are Madelines, which is more of a French style cake in muffin form. The Madelines are $3 apiece.
As you can garner by the stars I gave Uncle Tetsu, the cheesecake was a hit for me and totally lived up to the hype. My wife disagrees with me whole-heartedly and thinks the cake is overrated; but hey, it's my review, so I get my say. Onto the details!
The Cheesecake is as they all say, light and airy, with both a traditional cake, and a smooth texture. You can definitely taste the cream cheese, but it doesn't carry the heaviness of traditional New York style cheesecake. There are also flavours of egg white and evaporated milk.
What I found amazing about this cake is the layers of flavours which came out. At first bite, the cheesecake flavour is very prominent, and the texture with this is that of an airy cake, lighter than angel cake. Shortly after, you'll taste the egg whites accompanied with a smooth silky texture. It then finishes with the sweetness of the evaporated milk on your palette. A perfect ending that keeps you wanting more. (The egg flavours and texture reminds me of a Chinese dessert that's also egg and milk based, and I love that too!)
Such a simple looking cake, but packed with complex pairs (flavour and texture) layered in every bite. Is it worth the $10 for such a small cake? Definitely! Is it worth the 1 hour wait... not really. But that's where this location comes into play. The Unionville location is open until 23:00 and if you're looking for a nice dessert, the lines are often bearable after dinner here. And if you've paid attention to my check-in or the date on this posting, then you'll know that they're open on Christmas Day!
5 stars for the complexity of the cake,
5 stars for staying open late,
5 stars for working on Christmas Day!
My third 5 star rating. Congratulations Uncle Tetsu!
