  • First, they claim the average family will spend $1,000 annually in drinking water. Probably true. What they don't tell you that the filters need to be changed approximately every year, and that costs $200 (you have no option other than to buy the filters from them for $100, and it isn't that easy to install them, so you might as well pay them $100 to do it.) They also don't tell you that it costs you a service call of $139 each time they come out to fix something under warranty. Some warranty. I'm the type of person who keeps records, and this system has never given me a fraction of the amount of pure water advertised. Only I use the unit, and eventually I resigned myself to using it only for coffee and drinking water. Then I dropped down to only using it for drinking water. Periodically I'd call them, and was either told I needed another set of filters, or the ones I had were incorrectly installed. If I installed them "incorrectly" the system shouldn't have worked at all, instead of for a few months. Eventually I had their technicians install them. Same thing...worked for a few months. Out of frustration I'd go through periods of buying bottled water just to avoid dealing with the situation. Eventually I received a somewhat arrogant email from the general manager outlining my various contacts with Kinetico regarding my problems, along with a list of service and warranty calls with the implication that the problems were either imagined, or my fault. I responded to each of his statements (remember, I keep records) and did not receive a response. He agreed to send a technician at no charge to install the new filters I previously purchased, and that a 25-year professional handyman allegedly installed improperly. After the tech left the system worked for a while, but within six months the pressure started to rapidly decline. I called again and it was explained to me that there might have been something inherently wrong with the old style tank. The technician came out and said everything was working fine, and that the problem could have been a special filter that doesn't need to be changed often, but when it does it is "very expensive." By then my warranty had expired and they suggested I buy their new and improved system. Yeah right. In fairness to Kinetico, I can understand that sometimes there are problems with devices that cannot readily be explained, even by experts. The Kinetico technicians are very professional, but if they can't resolve an issue, you are left with no alternative than to go to management. At the top they act as if Kinetico can never be wrong, and they are doing you a favor by trying to make things right. Their R/O system does a good job purifying the water, but in my case that point was moot.
