| - My girlfriend discovered Cha Me. Cha through Yelp while searching for a new bubble tea shop. We made our first visit with two friends last night, and it has already become our go-to option for hangouts!
I truly enjoyed the snow ice, and loved how their drinks were not overly sweet. Our fried squid balls were the right amount of chewy, and the strawberry-banana toast had a very nice presentation. They admittedly ran out of ingredients for two dishes we initially ordered, however (which is troubling since another reviewer mentioned this as well). How could you run out of chicken wings because "it was very busy yesterday"? There is a supermarket (T&T) right beside Cha Me. Cha... which sells chicken wings. This was perhaps the low point of the visit, but in both cases our waitress issued multiple apologies and gave us ample time for an alternate selection. This was by no means a minor oversight on their part and almost knocked one star off my rating, but my party held the overall experience in such high regard that I am willing to overlook the misstep. Here's why.
First impressions are important. While Cha Me. Cha doesn't sport elaborate decor, it manages to provide a pleasant, uncontrived atmosphere. Tables are well spaced, but nothing unprecedented. The shop's visual sincerity is reflected in their service - the core of my 5-star rating.
We were served by a waiter and a waitress. There was no pressure while we waited for a straggling friend, and they maintained a very warm demeanour throughout our 3 hour stay. My friend wanted to edit her order after realizing how big the serving would be, and that was handled very nicely by the staff. Our waitress intuitively asked how many bowls we wanted for the sharing of a snow ice, which was great. When my friend received a straw that barely cleared the rim of her cup, our requests for a bigger straw and more napkins were met with all smiles and efficient service. My love for Cha Me. Cha truly blossomed when our waitress asked if we all wanted glasses of water - almost 15 minutes AFTER we had finished all our food and drinks! This indicates to me that they take pleasure in seeing comfortable patrons having a good time. Not just taking our money and clearing our table ASAP. Those smiles and thank yous never dissipated, even as we came within 5 minutes of closing time! The service and caring demeanour truly rivals some higher end restaurants.
In retrospect, it's truly sad that such simple gestures have become exceptions to the norm. I have not once been offered water elsewhere after my orders had been fulfilled. Many would be unenthusiastic or displeased at requests for water, or even give signals that I should leave if not ordering anything else. Cha Me. Cha was a refreshing experience, but a reminder to the sad state of customer service at most Asian joints in the GTA.
In the end, we ordered more food just to get Cha Me. Cha's 10% off VIP Card (which is supposedly obtainable through August 31, 2014) because we will be back. The requirement was to rack up $40 before tax, and comes with a complimentary tub of Frubo tapioca balls to take home (the same ones they put on their snow ice). I truly hope this level of service can be sustained as Cha Me. Cha establishes itself and sees heavier traffic. I will certainly be around to find out.
