| - Aldi is awesome. I was trying to recall just when I started shopping at Aldi, and it has to have been 12-13 years ago. It wasn't this location, of course, since they just opened. And though they have apparently been in the US since the 70s (according to the always-reliable Wikipedia), they didn't come to Charlotte until the well after that time: just after 2000, if my calculations are correct.
Regardless, at that time, they weren't much more than a small box store with the bare essentials. You could probably do 75% or so of your weekly shopping there, and that's fine. Now, however, they seem to have broadened their horizons - or we have moved to a better area - and the stores are a bit larger, a bit brighter, and the offerings are probably approaching 85-90% of the weekly shopping trip. It's also a heck of a lot closer, which is awesome all around.
When they opened the new store, they also had sampling (food sampling? at Aldi?) and gave away eco-friendly shopping bags, filled with goodies. Needless to say, I'm excited to have a brand-spanking-new Aldi just around the corner from our house. I'll be a regular, even with Publix coming in (though they will probably take care of the other 10-15% when needed).
