I haven't gone to a pick-your-own place since I was a little girl picking strawberries with my gramma, so this place had a lot of nostalgia to compete with.
We were after plum tomatoes today to make homemade tomato sauce and we found them in abundance! Everyone there seemed to be after the berries, which were severely over picked. They also had melons, field tomatoes, fall strawberries, raspberries, peppers and eggplant.
We got 2/3 of a bushel for the price of half, an ass load of hot peppers and some beautiful bell peppers all for a great price.
The only downside is that some families come with all their kids and just hang out and eat berries all day. The farm has partially solved the problem by charging a refundable $5 entrance fee that is returned to you when you pay for your veggies. There were so many people leaving with nothing-- it made me sad. I guess it's better than kids smoking crack.
I'm making my tomato sauce as I write this and the whole apartment smells of rich sweet tomatoes that will soon be in bottles so I can enjoy my very own fresh tomato sauce when the weather turns cold.
