| - Okay, I have to join the "Hey Tim, you're awesome! I love pie" party.
I used to think that I didn't really like pie all that much. It was a dark, sad period in my life. But after baking my first pie from scratch and being seriously surprised by how delicious it was, I somehow convinced myself that I HAD to compare it with the best pie in Toronto. Enter The Pie Shack.
The first time I tried to come here I was dismayed to find the Shack closed with a sign on the door that read that all the pies had been sold for a film shoot that day. A random woman on the street saw my crestfallen expression and proceeded to tell me that she had bought a pie there once and was extremely disappointed by the scantiness of the filling. Then she gave me a recommendation for another bakery up the street as I eyed her Tim Hortons coffee warily. Not one to trust random women on the street over the opinions of my beloved Yelpers, I vowed to return to The Pie Shack again.
My second visit proved to be much more successful, as The Pie Shack was open (!) and there was pie (!!) and the infamous Tim stood behind the counter (!!!). There weren't that many options in the front display as we came fairly late in the evening, but Tim rattled off our options and my boyfriend and I decided to split a slice of Bumbleberry with ice cream. We sat down and waited as Tim warmed our slice up for us, cut it in half, and gave us a scoop of ice cream each! What a guy. Any more praise for Tim and he might achieve sainthood.
Now, I admit that the pie was good. The crust was super light and flaky, and the filling had just the right amount of sweetness and tartness. The serving was generous and the perfect amount to share. But...I thought my homemade pie was just as good as Tim's. And could the random lady on the street with her Tim Hortons coffee and her cigarette have been right? The filling did seem a bit scant...and for a whopping $25 a pie at The Pie Shack, I'm not completely convinced that it's worth the trek out to the Beaches.
Anyway, lovely ambiance, impeccable service, great pie. Would definitely return for a slice of pie and a cup of coffee if I was in the area. They also do events and catering, which is nice to keep in mind.
