| - ItalFest really shows the value of taking a simple concept and maximizing the fun factor for a wide audience.
It came as a bit of a surprise to me that there was not only an Italian-centric festival in Mississauga, but that this was the fourth year it was running AND it was only a single-day event. With the level of professionalism and number of activities on display here, it was a shock that it wasn't a three-day festival yet (although I understand that there are plans in place to expand it over a full weekend next time around).
Thanks to the efforts of Kris and the Yelp GTA team, I took part in an Elite VIP tour of the festival, along with tastings at several vendors. The first thing that struck me was how accommodating the staff and our tour guide were. Anthony Primucci (of Palma Pasta, which has an amazing location at Hurontario and Queensway - you haven't lived until you've tried the chicken lasagna there) showed us a number of exhibits in the festival's "heritage space", which included a number of displays showing how Italian immigrants came to Canada and featured interactive maps, brochures, goodies and much more. It was fascinating to me that there was so much rich heritage, especially in Mississauga, that I had no clue about, and I consider myself to be a bit of a local history buff.
The entertainment itself was top-notch, including a father-and-daughter team, Alessandro and Roberta Battaglia. The latter was belting out impressive covers of power ballads, which was a bit of a shock since she was all of six years old. There were also a number of activities, including a pizza-making workshop, that I regret not taking part in.
Our tasting experience included samples from a number of different local vendors, including a local business called Speducci, which gave us melt-in-your-mouth pork skewers. The day was capped off with a cup of Sicilian ice cream. The organizers definitely went above and beyond making sure that the group I was with were taken care of.
As former Mayor Hazel McCallion put it so eloquently in her speech during the opening ceremonies, events like ItalFest show the value of hard work and community spirit, and this is one festival that I plan on checking out on an annual basis.
Highly recommended.
