| - My review will focus mainly on CityScape Holiday / Ice skating season ;)
I visited there yesterday and had a blast- even though I didn't skate. But, I got to meet Santa and milled about the rink and enjoyed the bee-you-tee-ful decors with the animated lights and (loud) music. I actually was there for the first time on opening tree-lighting day back in 2013 and met only Santa and didn't have the opportunity to hang around due to time constraints. So, I visited again for this year to really soak up the entire event mid-afternoon-to-evening and to take great photos. I had a blast just hanging around, and everyone there was in a gay holiday mood and many dressed up in holiday attire (as did I). Security was there but wasn't needed ;) Add to the appeal are the tall buildings / skyscrapers backdrop, and I felt like I was visiting NYC Central Park's little sister based in Phoenix in a milder climate. I like that the event spreads out to a few weekends more instead of squeezing it into one-day so it doesn't get so crowded. Yesterday had a great number of visitors with plenty of room all over without brushing past one another. It's a free event, and it costs $15 for adults to ice-skate with skate rental included, with discounts for military/seniors/older children and free for little ones (just search around for discounts offered- Nutcracker Ballet offed a promo last year, when I attended the Ballet). The sponsors and skate rentals support the event. They did a great job setting it up, it makes me proud. Oh, an added bonus: it's right by the Light Rail stops ;)
The lot used to be Patriots Square Park (and likely a so-so area then) until the city fixed it up several years ago by adding baby fountains (that you can play in) and stores/restaurants as well as hosting various entertainments- and pretty much molding the corners into a movie lot ;) It is not a "mall" but just some reliable places to visit year-round if you work/live downtown.
I highly recommend supporting this annual event, especially since you can ice-skate outdoors like the real thing, (yes, the ice was real) rather than when it used to be inside some old ugly malls where it felt pretty fake. I hope I can be able to skate next time around- I am more of a Roller Girl (who loves winter) ;)
Thanks for the fun and meet you there again another year!
