| - Dec 18th my daughter went to the center for an assessment and to see if we wanted to sign up. My dau. is in the tenth grade and struggling with Geometry. I had hopes that she would be able to do the tutoring during Christmas break, but unfortunately this center would be closed for the season so we would need to wait until 1/5 for the first class.
This center is family run. The family seemed very nice. An assessment was given to my dau. to see where she would need to start with tutoring. It was determined it would best to start with algebra. Per Mayu she basically has algebra down but just needs to be a little stronger in order to move onto Geometry. Mayu said that she would be my daughters tutor and within a couple weeks my dau. should be ready to move onto Geometry. She did say, if my dau. had questions regarding her school homework, that they could answer them for her. I had no problem following the Kumon homework or starting at algebra.
The pix attached will show the math examples she gave to us during our assesment. You will see that in the examples, it shows they cover algebra and a little Geometry.
The problem came on the first day of tutoring. She was not sat with Mayu as stated in our assessment. She was sat with a young man, who looked like he may have been high school age. That in itself would not have been a problem as long as he was qualified to teach algebra and Geometry. He asked my daughter what she needed help with and when she told him "Geometry", he replied that "we don't really do that here, but we can still help you with some of your homework questions".
Her homework for tutoring, should have already been ready for her to work on in the designated box they have. This homework should have been based on the assessment which was algebra.
The young man gave my dau. DIVISION to work on,2nd grade division. (see the photo) She is in the 10th grade and is way beyond this math. He told my dau. that they like to start here so they can access where she is at and work their way up. What?! We already "assessed" where she is at in our first meeting.
I wrote Mayu an email right away, discontinuing services. My email is below. Her reply is below that, which is unprofessional, full of excuses & covering her butt. She took no responsibility for the misrepresentation. No apologies.
Hello Mayu,
Today was Morgan's first day of tutoring. I am so unhappy with what took place today. When Morgan and I came to Kumon to see if it was right for us, you and I had agreed that Morgan would start out with Algebra, even though Morgan really needs help with Geometry. You thought it would help her to start with Algebra. You also said that you would be her teacher.
Today, she was sat with a younger gentleman rather than sitting with you.
That does not bother me so much as long as he knows how to teach Algebra and Geometry.
However, when he asked Morgan what she needs help with, she told him Geometry. He told her, "we don't really do that here, but we can still help you with your homework." He then gave her division to work on. Second grade level division! She is in the tenth grade. He said, they wanted to see how much she knows already. We already did that when we came in for the assessment of which, we determined she would start with Algebra.
It seems to me, like this particular Kumon Learning Center does not have anyone qualified to teach Geometry. My daughter needs help and I can not spend weeks and months on math that she already knows, especially when it's elementary math.
You have not met your end of the agreement therefore I would like to terminate this months tutoring so that i can find someone else who will be able to teach her Geometry. I don't think you have cashed the check yet so I will be putting a stop check on it.

Hi Beth,
Thank you for your feedback regarding Morgan's first day experience.
Let me set the record straight. When you and your daughter came in for parent orientation and placement testing, I clearly explained to you the Kumon process and what topics we cover. I even provided you the documents - table of learning materials and description of levels in the orientation packet when we met.
After evaluating the performance of your daughter through the placement test, the results were discussed with you including the point from which she would start. I also clearly stressed that Kumon is not a tutoring class catering to school syllabus but a program which develops a strong foundation in math skills needed for school and entry level college. In addition I offered to have our instructors guide her with her difficulties in Geometry concepts. I am sorry if this was not what you expected.
I have not cashed your check and will not do so based on your email. I wish your daughter Morgan the very best.
