  • My car had been making a loud noise when accelerating for a couple weeks. I had not had my car repaired in Montreal before and was on the look-out for a new mechanic. None of my friends have cars, so I went by the positive yelp reviews here and went to Merson. After inspection they quoted me the price for exhaust problem I was having which seemed a bit pricey but reasonable, as well as the prices for a few other things I knew were problems but hadn't gotten to yet (new front tires, oil change). However, they also told me that my head gaskets were leaking "like crazy!!!!" (written this way on their inspection sheet), that oil and antifreeze were "going everywhere" and this was a large, necessary repair that would cost at least $2000 before tax, perhaps more after they took it apart if they saw worse damage. They told me it must be done ASAP, or my car would be totaled as all the oil would leak out causing my car to run dry. I had them fix the exhaust, change my oil and front tires, and they called me up after the repair to tell me that they were able to repair the exhaust instead of replacing it, which cut the price from $900 to $688, but they also told me I should replace my back tires (which would bring it up to $900 again). I told them thank you for the repair, but don't change my tires. This "discount" is why I gave them 2 stars and not 1. I got a recommendation from another Montreal forum I frequent, picked up my car, and took it to this mechanic, Pneus et Bois St Pierre in Lachine, for a second opinion. They told me the leak was very, very minor, no need for repair and certainly not replacement at this moment, and to just keep an eye on it during all oil changes and tire changes in the future. No charge for their time. Sounds good to me. Merson lost me as a customer, that's for sure.
