  • More than anything about Kem CoBa, I was amused by the semi-serious twitter account, unaffiliated with the store, that started to document the line at the ice cream shop, occasionally with amusing tweets like: "there are 12 people risking their lives waiting for @kemcoba", "the line has lost its sense of self", "there are 6 people in line, 7 satisfied customers eating ice cream and 1 crying baby", or "there is one twitter account waiting for @Kemcoba to open" (*) I don't know whether the statement that Kem CoBa (which means "third auntie's ice cream" in Vietnamese as referred to by one of the owners' niece) is closed makes people get panic attacks, but the ice cream shop is closed for 6 months+ till April 29, 2017. The shop isn't just a neighborhood darling, but Montrealers broadly feel passionately about it, and its reputation also draws in tourists in large numbers. The two owners are from France and Vietnam, and their backgrounds factor into flavors like salted butter, lychee, Soursop, Durian (insanely popular, much like the fruit, though not for people with "sensitive olfactory senses"). The flavors change regularly, I believe every two weeks, when they are open, and beyond the ice creams and sorbets, their soft serve ice creams are yuuuugely popular. They've started selling homemade baked goods at the store as well. I think what's caught on in Montreal is genuine enthusiasm for independent small business as opposed to chains, for the line at Kem CoBa far exceeds the lines at Baskin Robbins, DQ, etc. Personally, I liked the ice cream, but wasn't bowled over by the limited flavor selection. As someone who always has in his freezer 12+ pints of ice cream from ice cream shops across the US, I realize I'm somewhat addicted to variety. And, it was also plain bad luck in terms of timing that the flavors I was interested in, e.g. soft serves like la romantique: rose water ice cream and raspberry sorbet, blackberry and Citron, dulce de leche with mango sorbet, etc., were no longer on offer. I'd love to come back and update the rating, for I'm sure from the pictures, and the willingness of people to endure 30-40 minutes waits, that this is a special place. (*) interesting despite the fact that I don't care to have a twitter account...
