  • Cuisine Malaya... I like you, but I would drop you in a heartbeat if a better Malaysian restaurant came to town. Why do I like you? Because you have a few of the important Malaysian standbys, like nasi lemak, char kway teow, white coffee, etc. The thing is, at Cuisine Malaya, these dishes are average at best and sub par at worst. Let's start with the basics: nasi lemak is fairly hard to screw up and, at Cuisine Malaya, it's fine. The coconut rice is too dry, so you don't get enough of that mild, creamy coconut flavor that sets Malaysian nasi dishes apart. The char kway teow tastes fine if you're not familiar with Malaysian / Singaporean cuisine. However, the texture of the meat is all wrong; white meat chicken without any browning. Yeah, I'll pass next time. The white coffee is clearly from a powder - you can go and get a pack of the same stuff (Old Town White Coffee) from Super G Mart and have it at home whenever you like. The standout here is the roti canai - excellent crispy on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside texture. Outstanding sauce to go with it. Improvement needed on the beef curry laksa (too bland), roti telur (also bland), and the satay (not enough peanut flavor in the sauce). That said, there are a lot of dishes I'd still like to try at Cuisine Malaya (pineapple rice, Hainan chicken, popiah), so I'll give them another shot and post another review after the fact.
