Years ago (pre-Yelp!) before there were any other non-big-chain options in this area & I was a visitor in town, I went to Green Beanery in my search for decent espresso-based drinks in Toronto. The latte I had was so awful (bitter and just a terrible taste) that I didn't go back that visit, my subsequent stays here, or even when I moved here.
However, this past Sunday I actually returned (thanks to the Indie Coffee Passport) for a soy latte in the morning while waiting for friends, and wasn't horrified. The service was a bit aloof but not necessarily rude, and the creation of the coffee was prompt. The drink itself was passable - not overly strong with bitterness (although the foam retained a little of the burnt flavour of the crema), enjoyable enough to sip and gave a nice kick.
3 stars rather than two because they have soy milk out as well as other milks to add to brewed coffee or tea, and they do have a killer range of coffee-related appliances and paraphernalia. Plus there's an interesting view of Bloor/Bathurst as neverending entertainment to stare out their windows at. Regardless, Green Beanery still remains low on my stack of caffeination priorities in this area.
