| - This isn't about their primary business (alcohol), but speaks to their attitude on customer service.
I found Tops while searching for CO2 refillers for my 20lb tank - they were recommended because of their cheap ($1/lb) pricing. Before today, I refilled my tank there twice, each time paying $20. But the second time, when I got home, I noticed that the tank seemed rather light. Weighing it, I realized they'd only delivered about 10-12 lbs of CO2.
So today, I took my electronic shipping scale with me. The pony-tailed cashier dude commented "cool scale". Haha. I weighed my empty (and cold) tank in front of him. 25.25 lbs. So I expected after he filled it, it would come in at about 45 lbs.
Nope. Weight post-filling was 33.98 lbs. In other words, they delivered 8.75 lbs. The poor cashier didn't know what to do, since they always charge $20 for filling a "20 lb" tank, yet I was suggesting that I should only pay $9, given the $1/lb pricing they claim and the fact that they had only delivered about 9 lbs.
About this time, another employee (manager?) wanders out from the back. He says their equipment automatically stops when the tank is full, so it must have 20 lbs of CO2 in it now. Then, he proceeds to suggest that he doesn't know whether "you might have tampered with the scale". Wow - pretty tactful customer relations, eh? Especially, since they are selling CO2 based on weight, yet they don't even have a scale to determine how much they've delivered.
I finally said, so what are you going to charge me? $9 based on my scale readings, or $20 because it's a 20 lb tank (which they didn't actually fill)? Yep, they charged me $20.
Fortunately, there are other, better CO2 sources which appear to be more expensive, but are actually cheaper because you, in fact, get what you think you're buying.
Won't be back to Tops, ever. Not for CO2, nor for their apparently out-of-date beer.
