| - Great food, perfect service, nice ambience. Yeah, this place is a winner.
My wife and I spent a long weekend in Montreal and, before arriving, got a flurry of restaurant recommendations from friends. We had a couple of casual swanky (I'd put Tuck Shop and Garde Manger in that category) suggestions as well as a number of ultra casual spots to hit. Tuck Shop was near the top out of all the places we tried.
I could go on about the food, but the other reviews hit that well. The food is excellent and that isn't surprising. Where Tuck Shop separates from others of a similar category is the ambience, service and overall dining experience. The design is modest, comfortable and consistent. The service was the best we received in Montreal, and it's clearly something the management emphasizes. Case in point, the busboys are like ninjas. You don't see them; you don't notice that someone removed a cocktail straw or crumb from your table; but they were there and they did clean your table. Maintaining such clean tables, in a small space, without interfering with the customer? That's nearly impossible but Tuck Shop does it seamlessly.
The pace of the meal was also perfect. Our food didn't arrive the second it was ordered (I'm looking at you, Garde Manger, with your McDonald's pace). We had time to enjoy each course and rebuild a bit of appetite for the next. Very well done.
Other things...drinks were great and even post-dinner cocktail suggestions were perfect. When back in Montreal, we'll be back at Tuck Shop.
