  • Food is Ok, but it's really about the ambiance. It's not really the same if you don't sit on the patio. I would venture to say not worth it. I would rate it three stars if you have to sit inside. On the back patio, there are tables nestled into nooks and surrounded by fruit trees and bushes. Decor makes you feel like you're in a romantic Mexican locale. Twinkly lights in the trees, fans in the summer, heaters in the cooler months. Often there's Latin music (in tonight's case, Latin, rock and country), which adds to the atmosphere. Can be festive or romantic. The tree blossoms smelled great tonight! The best thing I've had there is the shrimp quesadilla. The shrimp enchiladas as just Ok; hubby's shrimp chile relleno was just "alright." They have an excellent salsa (they're owned by the same folks who own El Sol Bakery, who sells their salsa at Whole Foods and Walmart). I got a raspberry swirl margarita, and it was overly sweet, a bit koolaidy. That didn't prevent me from drinking the whole thing! :-) I really like that some of their glassware is from DiSciacca, a cool glass shop in Downtown Chandler. Zocalo definitely DOESN'T take reservations. They tell you this in their opening spiel if you call. Got there at about 6:20 tonight, and the wait for the patio was about 30 minutes, maybe a bit less. It definitely gets longer. You can wait at the bar or outside on the patio, there are chairs and benches in front of the band or person playing music. I was a little annoyed tonight at the musician. At one point he urged people who were finished with their meals to give up their tables and go sit on the benches/chairs near where he was. He said that they had asked him to encourage folks to do this. Whatever! I'll give up my table when I'm good and ready. Anyway, I can always count on a nice night out with friends or a loved one at Zocalo. Food is just ok, but the patio rocks.
