| - I really prefer this place to Cardenas sometimes. It is smaller and less busy. There are more registers open and I am never stuck in a crazy line. The produce, while more limited selection, is still really cheap compared to regular grocery stores. You can't come in and find 5 types of pears, etc. like Cardenas Market, but you can get everything you need for a week of heavy fruit and veggie eating at a bargain price. Produce is pretty good quality. I got the best strawberries here this week - sweetest I have had all year and it is winter! :) But last time some of my produce was not as good as Cardenas. I still like Marketon - if you need a lot of produce, don't want to pay regular retail at a store like Smith's, and want some meat and authentic Mexican products, this store is perfect.
The meat section is awesome! So far all the meats and fish we bought here were good. It is well organized and while small, it seems really clean! The people seem very professional here.
My kids like the baked goods like pan dulce. So far, bakery has been good. (The bakery is where I blow all my produce savings.)
I also like the Mexican yogurt (El Mexicano - made in California - ha). It has more chunks of fruit, in the big container, than regular American yogurt.
As another reviewer mentioned, the ceviche is good. I was nervous to buy raw fish here since I was new to it, so I got the "crab" ceviche which has immitation crab - but it was so good. It wasn't overly onion-y (a pet peeve of mine in ceviche). I think I will venture into the raw stuff eventually! And the salsas are good too!
Also, I read the website and the owner was originally from Spain, which means you can buy turron here - turron de chocolate - yum! You must buy it if you have never tried it. :) It is a favorite of mine from my old days of study abroad.
Like a previous reviewer, I am half Latina and my Spanish is ok but not great. So people look at me and think I speak Spanish, then I fumble with it and people can tell my Spanish is not bueno! So - I will compare this place to Cardenas. In Cardenas, everyone is pretty much bilingual. Here, that is not the case. You can get through it speaking English though (credit/debit - not hard!). Most meat is in packages so you can avoid the meat counter completely if you feel nervous to point and pick your meat in Spanish. :) Produce is all labeled in both languages, so not a problem there. It was very easy to figure out what things were. That said I feel a little more awkward in this store as a primarily English speaker, but I will definitely continue to come here. Great store!
