| - When Mashion Bakery first opened on Spadina I:
- like a Pavlovian response, developed an insta-craving for BBQ pork buns
and
- fist pumped at the opening deal of 3 buns for $1 (that was coming from the inner - often silenced - financial planner in me)
More than a year later...that deal is still in full effect. A bun will cost you *dramatic reveal, booming voice* 33 cents. CENTS! Mashion Bakery is the only place where I still put my pennies (literally) to excellent use.
Mashion Bakery is set up like all traditional Hong Kong-style bakeries: grab a tray, walk past the tempting cases, pick out what you want and then cash out. All the usual cast of sweet and savoury characters are there - tuna bun, beef curry bun, red bean bun, egg tart - but I'd like to call out the following:
* the steamed pork bun is fantastic, with moist filling and a warm-and-fluffy exterior
* the rolled sponge cakes, in both traditional vanilla and tropical flavours like mango, are party pleasers (if they make it)
* the spring rolls are well-filled and crispy
New strategy: instead of paying for a subway token, spend that money on an assortment of Mashion offerings and walk them off en route home. To quote Michael Scott: that's a win-win-win.
Yelp note: what I love about Mashion is that, up at the pay counter, they have special deals. Sometimes that's a baked good of the day; often it's their day-old/end-of-day stock at seriously discounted prices. What's better than 3 for a dollar? Let your imagination roam free: A WHOLE BAG OF BUNS for a dollar! Re-steamed at home in the microwave and you are - deliciously and economically - a winner.
